"Meet me in the Rose Garden at lunch time!"

Hisashi had been nothing short of puzzled when the strangely familiar girl had approached him in the hallway before class and said what she had. Why was she familiar? He'd taken so long trying to figure that out that he didn't get a chance to ask the all-important question of why before she'd scurried off to her class before she'd be late. Leaving behind one very confused cat.

"Oh, ho, ho! Tatsuno-kuuun's got a daaaate~!" At the voice Hisashi turned around to see one of the students who had been loitering nearby grinning at him. In fact, he noticed a few students were looking in his direction with varying amounts of amusement.

"Da-... what now? What are you talking about?" It was just an invitation, right? From someone he obviously had met once during the class trip. Surely nothing more..? But now those people were moving in closer until he bristled a little at being suddenly penned in.

"Well you know what this is all about right?"

"Ah.. n-.. yes? I mean.. she probably wants to talk..?"

Hisashi had to take care to mind his shadow as otherwise his tails probably would've been lashing in irritation at not knowing what everyone else seemed to know. Suddenly he felt an arm drape over his shoulders and he looked up to see one of his classmates, ready to lead him into their classroom but apparently with an intention to enlighten him along the way..

----

A very different Hisashi awaited the visit in the Rose Garden. Gone was his confusion and in its place an almost unbearable sort of confidence. Of course she was going to confess! He was a catch in his own form and certainly no different in this one. Better still, he'd recalled how he knew her. So she was a nice girl! He could really give that a chance. Learn some new and different human habits. Win-win all around.

Hisashi sat in plain sight on one of the benches and waited, looking very neat and-.. had he even combed his hair since that conversation? It sure seemed like it. He was always clean and well-groomed, after all, no matter the form. For the moment he had a smirk on his face and his arms folded as he leaned back on the bench, eyes closed in thought as he considered what he might say to her.

The mournful strains of violin music drifted across the grounds of Kikuryou Academy. It was night time, the new moon casting everything into darkness, and the lack of wind made it feel like the Academy itself was holding its breath.

As Tom Marsh walked along, playing his violin, his face was completely expressionless. It seemed almost like the music was playing him, rather than the other way around. Perhaps it was. For this was no normal symphony, but rather, a prelude. Around him drifted a cloud of beautiful red moths, glowing around him like a swarm of embers, drifting like fallen leaves. They followed that tune like they would a flame, guided by it like a funeral march to the student dormitories.

Not that they would remain in their close orbit for long. As soon as they detected any human life, clumps of them broke off to swarm the unfortunate soul. To breathe in the poison in their wings was to feel one’s heart pound in fear. To be touched by them was to find the worst nightmares in the victim’s heart freed and brought to the surface. They fed on such horrors, and they wouldn’t stop their torment so long as they lived. Nowhere would be safe, not once they’d caught the scent of a victim.

Yet, for all of that danger, for as much as Tom seemed to be in control… there was another. A shadow to his presence, a silence to his music. A predator in the night that watched the assault with cold, cruel amusement. And most importantly, one who waited for those who might try to stop Tom, for he wouldn’t see his game stopped, not when this was only the opening move…

For a while, Tsubaki was... perhaps not relieved that the school trip was over, and now everything was back to what it was, but at least thankful that normalcy had been restored to her fellow students. It made being class rep - an ultimately thankless position, if one did not count the pin on her lapel and the free lunches, though the extra amenities like an open room in Sumire dorm (declined as her parents preferred her to be with only other girls, and Sumire Dorm was co-ed), and the free uniforms made the thankless work of corralling her fellow students and trying to keep her grades up at least worth a little something.

She wondered if this was a "carrot-and-stick" situation.

Today she had decided to look up her fellow Class Representative and a few gentle inquiries had led her to the music room. She played instruments (a summer of lessons to please her parents had given her some skill at piano), but had never actually made it up that far. And he was playing. It was nice, but a bit strange and sometimes the way he played made chills go up her spine, and vibrato race across her scalp.

Not terrible, no. But strange. Tsubaki waited for a few more minutes before she pushed the door open. "Marsh-san?"

Back from the trip and with a festival to fund and put together, Nao was hard at work. Social media was the way to go! All she needed was a camera phone-- check-- and a few artistic a looking photos to put on Instapic and FriendChat and FaceSnap and those kinds of things! What was easier than that?

So that was why there was a short little kimono-clad miko wandering around the courtyard of the shrine, snapping photos with her cheap-o flip phone. Currently she was standing in front of the shrine's tiny shop, trying to get the perfect shot of the merchandise: lucky charms, talismans, prayer and pilgrimage books, items to keep away evil or bring in good, holy arrows and prayer boards. There were also some other odd things that didn't quite belong: bookmarks, beaded bracelets, homemade cupcakes, a few baskets of blueberries. A handwritten sign on the side of the booth window advertised bottles of water and rice balls.

Well, you had to branch out in business sometimes. Nao needed to see what kinds of things people actually wanted, so this was a test. She hoped customers would stop by!

Nao was busy in the small kitchen of the Kasuga home. She was putting the finishing touches on lunch, the trays laid out for five. She'd made cabbage rolls, a simple but homey, tasty dish which consisted of spiced ground pork and vegetables wrapped in a cabbage leaf and a slice of bacon, secured with a toothpick, then boiled in broth to cook.

She lined up the cabbage rolls on each plate and then added homemade pickled cucumber and carrot salad. A bowl of chilled silken tofu, a glass of iced buckwheat tea, and a sliced orange from the garden finished off the meal. Nao switched the plates and bowls around a bit! Trying to figure out how to best arrange them. Then she shrugged and picked up her grandmother's and mother's trays, balancing them carefully. Time to eat. )

{ OOC:  Post dated a week before the trip }

The air felt cool and refreshing on her face as Midori walked outside with her lunch in her hand.  The first half of her first day had certainly been…different.  First she had gotten lost and then while she was trying to find her home room before being incredibly late a kappa had chased her down an endless hallway, and she was positive that’s what it had been.  Then she had come in the wrong doors.  Really separate doors for teachers and students?  Then Shibata-sensei had told her that electronics were banned and he was supposed to give them to the vice principal to throw away! She was so grateful that he had taken pity on her and told her to just hide them in her bag!  What would she had done if he had actually taken them?!  Probably something incredibly foolish that would get her in trouble.  She gasped then.  What if they still paddled students in Japan? Grandmother told her things were much stricter here than back home.  Oh she couldn’t even entertain that idea!  Isn’t the kappa running around in the halls enough of a punishment?

She found a big shady tree and plopped down, leaning against it.  Well at least it was lunch time now.  She took the rubber band out of her hair and shook her head, finger combing her black hair with the bright red streaks.  Shibata-sensei had told her there was some silly rule about dyed hair too.  She hadn’t really believed him, surely that was something Grandmother had cooked up and called him to tell her.  Still she had humored him and put her hair up.

I wonder what Grandmother sent in my pack.  The options had to be limited she had packed it two days ago.  Midori had just gotten off the plane yesterday.  “Onigiri!”  She laughed as she opened up her lunch bag and saw.  It was her favorite food when she was little and grandmother had always made it for her first day of school.  She pulled out her bright purple headphones, surely they were allowed during lunch!  But she peeked around really quick before putting them on her head and turning on a club mix as she popped open a can of Coca-Cola.  She stared at the can smiling.  She had been surprised they had it in here in Japan.  What else had Grandmother neglected to tell her about the mother land?

{Backdated to 1 week before trip}

Tap tap tap tap
Midori’s school shoes made a distinct noise as she hurried down the hallway.  Great! My first day and I’m going to be late! She groaned and turned down another corridor desperately trying to find her home room. It’s really not my fault though.  I just flew in yesterday and haven’t gotten a chance to get use to the time change.  No, no she couldn’t think like that.  Grandmother had told her Americans make excuses, but Japanese begged forgiveness and took full responsibility for their mistakes.

She turned down another corridor hurrying along, her headphones blaring her newest techno mix she had made on the long flight from LA.  She loved her new headphones, Grandmother had said they were totally inappropriate for Japan, but mother had said she needed a going away present and something to remember America by, so she had gotten the latest Beats by Dre and they were electric purple too! She looked up at a door she was passing. 1-C?! But I’m a second year!   How could she be lost?  Her high school in America was easily double this size and she’d never ever gotten lost, even on her first day.

Midori shivered, feeling the air get suddenly very cold around her.  Something didn’t feel right all of a sudden.  She quickened her pace, desperately trying to find at least the hallway that held the second year homerooms.  Taptaptaptaptap  she turned again.  She was going to be so very very late.  She hadn’t even seen another person this morning.  The air got colder and she could swear she could feel something behind her.  She whirled around, her black and red hair twirling around her as she did so.  “Hello?”  Nobody was there. She pulled her headphones down around her neck, the loud club music blaring from them.

Get a hold of yourself Midori.  She mentally shook herself and turned back around hurrying down the hall again.  She glanced over at a door she was walking past.  1-C…hadn’t she already passed that?  She turned around trying to get her bearings but the corridor just went on and on and on in both directions.  Where in the heck was she?!  Then she heard it.  A soft whispering kind of growl that seemed to just slide inside her skin and down her spine. A kappa!  She’d been terrified her whole life that one was coming for her.  Hadn’t Grandmother said they come after kids that misbehaved?  She was late for class on her very first day and now a kappa was coming to get her!

She broke out in to a run, her shoes clacking on the floor as she went.  Stupid restrictive school uniform!  How could she properly run away from a mythical kid eating beast in this?  Oh how she longed for her board shorts, t-shirt, and Nikes.  Nothing could catch her in something practical like that.  Midori ran and ran down the endless hall. 1-C again.  She had passed it before!  What was going on with this freaky school?  Grandmother never warned her about endless halls and monsters chasing her down them.  “I’m a good girl!  I just got lost!”  She yelled over her shoulder as she kept running, her bookbag bouncing on her back with each stride of her long legs.

A pair of double doors appeared to her left and she burst through them.  “Help me!”  She cried out, but the room…it wasn’t a school room.  It was a bog…just like where the kappas lived and took you to eat you!  She screamed, louder than she knew she was even capable of doing and turned and ran back out the doors.  No kappa was going to eat her!  She could feel it gaining on her.  That low growl getting louder and louder, the air getting colder and wetter.

“Somebody?  Anybody?”  She yelled out as she ran down the endless hallway.  Then she felt the talisman bouncing against her chest as she ran.  Grandmother’s talisman!  She had made Midori to promise to never ever take it off.  It had protected Grandmother as a young girl all she had to do was say the prayer.

Midori grasped the talisman in both hands, the small rectangular talisman that had Grandmother’s family name on it, dangling from the silver chain.  She fell to her knees and started reciting the prayer she’d been taught since she could talk.  “Kind benevolent spirits please protect us and show us the path to the light.”  She repeated it over and over again, her eyes squeezed shut as she waited for the kappa to pounce on her, but the kappa never came.  She more felt the light pouring out around her than actually seeing it, and then the air was warm again.  She opened on green eye peeking around, and then the other.  Everything looked normal again, her music began to blare from the headphones around her neck.  She hadn’t even noticed that they had stopped.  She looked around.  Everything looked normal again.  There was a door right in front of her, she peered up at it.  2-C.  She slowly got to her feet, smoothed her skirt and then her hair, took a deep breath and knocked on the closed door before opening it and going in.  “Ohayo gozaimasu.  Please forgive my lateness sensei.”

Kokoro’s volleyball bounced between her wrists and into the air, over and over. The last game could have gone better, and while the Kikuryou Yurei had managed to pull victory from the jaws of defeat (securing their place in the playoffs!) Kokoro couldn’t help but feel like she could have done much better. Her spikes only got them so far, and her passes were generally agreed to be her weak point.

Of course, it was hard to bump a ball she couldn’t pass to anyone. The tallest girl both on the team and (she feared) within the entire school, was dressed in her practice uniform, pink hair darker with sweat at her temples. The weird thing that had attacked them in the locker room at the opening day seemed to have squiggled off somewhere, leaving it free and clear for the girls’ sports teams to use.

Bap. Bap. Bap.

Kokoro let her hands drop and caught the ball. "I need to get this together. Come on, me."

((OOC: This takes place a little before the Dopple event.))

Sometimes, in order to get what one wanted, an investment had to be made. When it came to people, that involved finding out what they wanted and providing it. Whether companionship, money, protection, or whatever. There were a lot of options, and it took a great deal of effort and attention to find the correct answer.

Shichiro, for his part, had done his research, and after his last conversation, he'd arranged a date that he was certain would win Kylar's heart. To ensure his success, he'd also packed lunches- all meat for both of them- and bottles of pure water, and a few other things he'd put in his backpack, just in case. He also rehearsed what he knew of their interactions, and had a plan of attack. Coming on too strong would just spook Kylar. He'd have to take it slow, play it smooth, and make sure Kylar could trust him. It'd be slow, but it'd be worth it, if he could manage it.

That'd be the trick, though. For now, Shichiro waited at the gates of the shrine, it being the closest landmark that a foreigner could find easily. After that, it'd be a little bit of a hike, but... that also meant that no one would interrupt them! And that would be absolutely fantastic... if everything went according to plan. For now, thinking of that made Shichiro grin and his shadow start wagging its tails. Heh heh, this was going to be good!

Ever since his last encounter with Sumire who had actually been Dopple, but still, Tom had held a great deal of suspicion toward the school nurse. There were far too many injuries in this school for her to not ask questions, and that meant she was either complicit or she knew more than she let on. Chances were also good that she'd have some kind of record about the more supernatural students and the other people in the school. So, whether she was incompetent or evil, confronting her would be a very good idea.

Tom waited until school was over and the infirmary was empty before he made his move. Sumire tended to linger, putting away supplies and otherwise tidying up, so that was the best chance he'd have. Hopefully this would end all right, and she wouldn't need to be hit with a few mysteries, but if that was what it took...

...if that was what it took. He took a few deep breaths to steel himself, and then let himself in. Then he closed the door behind him, hoping that no one would interrupt this. "Nurse Sumire?"

If you possessed a map of Kikuryou's former castle grounds, you would notice ancient paths laid out in various geometric diagrams, leading from the school grounds around the old Kasuga shrine and ruins of unknown buildings from centuries past. A large and exact triangle was made by the school grounds, the Kasuga Shrine, and the forest that lay adjacent to both. Heavily forested wilderness beyond the school grounds stretched as far as one could see, a sea of green. It led straight out to the high mountains in the North and West.

When one stepped over the holy barrier tied between the school grounds and the forest, it seemed as if the forest itself was watching with many pairs of eyes. )

If there was one thing Kylar liked about Japan it was the convenience of the boxed meal. It wasn't like he hadn't had them elsewhere before but there was a certain quality lacking. Maybe it was the presentation. The fine wooden boxes he and Arin had been sent along to school with added a wonderful visual aspect.

As he carried two boxes -- one stacked atop the other -- it occurred to him that even to himself he sounded very old and very boring. Arin would insist he was in fact just a hipster and attempt to explain Instagram so he could take pictures of his pretty lunchboxes.

He frowned a little and stared straight ahead as he kept on walking. He was meeting Shichiro and since he'd requested they meet somewhere outside the building he thought it would be fair to bring along something to eat. That was considerate. He had manners. Also maybe his new acquaintance would have less opportunity to invade his personal space if they were eating.

At least the school had plenty of quiet spots on the grounds. He didn't trust Shichiro anywhere near enough yet to want to wander the forest with him. Once he'd arrived at the place they'd chosen he sat down and set the bento boxes down beside him. In the meantime he would attempt to relax and enjoy the shade of the overhanging tree.

Ultimately he didn't look relaxed at all -- he was sitting perfectly straight and upright with his arms folded. He was the picture of awkward unease.

So the fight with the shapeshifting monster had been... difficult. Even now, after his body had gotten a few minutes to heal, Shichiro felt like he could barely put one foot in front of the other. Even worse, getting to the shrine meant climbing up stairs, and never in his life had they felt so impassable as at that moment.

Worse was the fact that he didn't have any form he could safely assume. As a fox, he was in danger of having an arrow shot at him. As a human, Nao would hate him and the others would be suspicious of him. Nor did he have enough energy to weave an illusion to look like anyone else. So, what to do?

In the end, he'd take yelling and threats to an arrow. So, in human form, with torn school uniform and blood streaked across his face and throat, he dragged himself past the front door and off to the garden. Nobuyuki's office should be somewhere here, and hopefully the old man would be on his own. Hopefully.

Once he found it, Shichiro slid open the sliding door... and promptly collapsed into the room. Even making it this far was a minor miracle, that he could still speak was another. Which he would. In a second. When the world stopped spinning.

When Tom had thought of places to share with Arin, he had originally thought of going with one of the basements, or maybe the graveyard out in the forest, or places like that. There had to be something in there, right?

But one day, while he was in the computer room, he'd noticed some ghosts floating around. Maybe they hadn't realized they'd died, maybe they were just curious about all of the emotions going on in the room, maybe it was something else entirely. Hard to say. The important thing was that it'd be easy to get in after hours, there were ghosts around, and there were two whole stories that weren't in use any longer.

Or in other words, it was prime ghost-hunting territory, while presumably not being too dangerous.

It had even been child's play to create a plan. Tom had simply stayed late with the computer club, and when he'd said his farewells, he'd gone up to the third floor rather than leaving the second building. The plan was simple: Tom would let Arin in, and Arin would bring in the materials, like flashlights and such, that Tom couldn't. It was practically perfect, and now Tom waited in the dark for Arin's quiet knock. Once that happened, they'd be off...

The one thing about school life that Shichiro had found hardest to adjust to was, ironically, just how little effort it took. No need to run, no need to hunt, no need to do much of anything. Except sit. And wait. And sit. And wait.

It led to a lot of pent-up energy, and pranks could only let out so much of it. So, he'd started nosing around for other means of keeping himself busy... and found one. The swimming pool. He wasn't the world's best swimmer, but he could certainly hold his own, and not having too many people around made it even better. He'd even made it part of his routine, one that he found himself enjoying.

Of course, that meant changing, so after the school day was over, Shichiro made his way to the changing room and started undressing. For now, he used regulation-approved swim wear, but... he'd have to consider other options, later. For now, his mind was on the cool water waiting him, and if he was in fox form, he'd have his tail wagging like mad. Life in school was turning out to be surprisingly good. He'd just have to keep enjoying it!

It's April 6th, 2009. The cherry trees are blooming and the stairwell walls are bleeding! Welcome back to the new school year after the 3 week break.

Attendance and staff numbers are down, but Principal Narimatsu and Vice Principal Ono are not slacking off and neither should you. Vacation is over! Get in the gates on time and get to your homeroom! (And shine those shoes!)

New students will be given a tour by volunteers. All students and staff will be served a fancy picnic lunch of tea, finger sandwiches, and canapes in the courtyard at lunchtime today.

Be careful, the ghosts are very rowdy today!

Ren cared about all of her students equally, but she would be lying if she said she didn't feel just a bit more empathetic towards Tom, who stuck out like a sore thumb. It wasn't easy to try to assimilate into Japanese culture when you weren't Japanese (or in her case, fully Japanese). Everyone at the school was generally very kind but it could be tiring and lonely. Ren decided to make it her business to take time out of her day to go check on Tom and see how he was doing.

She wanted to start the school year off on the right foot and what better way than having an impromptu counseling session with a new student?

The students were getting to leave for the day, so Ren made her way to the shoe lockers, her faithful laptop tucked under her arm. Tom was, obviously, very easy to spot among the other students.

"Hi," she said in English, smiling brightly. "Do you have a second? I promise I won't hold you for too long."
