Event: The Terror of the Scarlet Moths

The mournful strains of violin music drifted across the grounds of Kikuryou Academy. It was night time, the new moon casting everything into darkness, and the lack of wind made it feel like the Academy itself was holding its breath.

As Tom Marsh walked along, playing his violin, his face was completely expressionless. It seemed almost like the music was playing him, rather than the other way around. Perhaps it was. For this was no normal symphony, but rather, a prelude. Around him drifted a cloud of beautiful red moths, glowing around him like a swarm of embers, drifting like fallen leaves. They followed that tune like they would a flame, guided by it like a funeral march to the student dormitories.

Not that they would remain in their close orbit for long. As soon as they detected any human life, clumps of them broke off to swarm the unfortunate soul. To breathe in the poison in their wings was to feel one’s heart pound in fear. To be touched by them was to find the worst nightmares in the victim’s heart freed and brought to the surface. They fed on such horrors, and they wouldn’t stop their torment so long as they lived. Nowhere would be safe, not once they’d caught the scent of a victim.

Yet, for all of that danger, for as much as Tom seemed to be in control… there was another. A shadow to his presence, a silence to his music. A predator in the night that watched the assault with cold, cruel amusement. And most importantly, one who waited for those who might try to stop Tom, for he wouldn’t see his game stopped, not when this was only the opening move…

While Shichiro had to share the Academy with a wide variety of creatures, some of which were stronger than himself, he still saw himself as a power to be reckoned with, even as one of the primary movers of the place. Certainly, he wouldn't let just anyone move in and hurt the humans under his protection, and new creatures were always viewed with some suspicion.

This wasn't a new creature, though, not entirely. He recognized Tom from their time together during vacation, but he'd never seen the boy so vacant. Certainly never with those odd... moth, things. Even at this distance, Shichiro could tell that something bad was going on with them. But what?

Whatever it was, he wouldn't allow it. So, in his war form, like a fox the size of a pony, with pure white fur and golden markings, he accosted Tom. "Tom-kun, what are you doing? Dismiss those moths wherever you found them, because I won't allow any of them to attack the students here. Maybe then you can expain... hey...!"

Tom was ignoring him. Continuing to play, without even looking at him. That made Shichiro snarl and launch some of his fox-fire at the moths, fully planning on burning them away so that he could get at Tom himself. Whatever was going on, it was his responsibility to put it to rights!

After being sure Kokoro and any other people he could find were safe in their rooms, Suguru ran for it. He was a sitting duck in the dorm, and there were too many people around who could be hurt by his brother if Shigeru decided to go for hostages. If he went home.... Hmmm. At least there there were far less innocent bystanders.

More importantly, why was he here? What was he going to try? Should Suguru bet that it only involved him and run for it, while he still could, to draw Shigeru away from innocents? Then again, it wasn't like he didn't know for a fact that there wasn't a place in the world he could go to where Shigeru wouldn't find him...

He leapt softly and silently as shadow from his window to a ledge, climbing up the huge pine outside his window with nary a rustle, then to the rooftop of the Sumire dorm. From that height, he slunk through the shadows towards the northernmost corner of the building, where he could see the whole campus spreading out around him.

Well. School had become fun again, he thought to himself. Up until now, he'd griped and groaned and grumped but when he thought about his days now, it was with a smile.

Dammit. He wasn't ready to give that up.

Suguru crouched on the roof. Underneath the studden leather cuff he was wearing, his fingertips were touching the string bracelet he never took off. It was aqua blue and lime green, and just touching the frayed edge of it made his heart warm.

"What do I do," he asked the strings in the smallest whisper. "What would you have told me to do?"

Kylar would have imagined tighter security on the part of the school. If not because of actual, physical threats than surely because someone knew about the supernatural elements present in the area. Wards, stronger locks. Anything.

But no.

Perhaps he was just spoiled by the labyrinth that was the Stroud estate back home and its layer upon layer of security both mundane and otherwise. Or maybe this was just weak by human standards anyway. Arin had mentioned something about a certain level of trust or openness in Japan anyway. Something about not having locks on doors for a reason. Whatever it was, it didn't matter. He'd found his way into the pool well after hours and had been doing so now for awhile. No one seemed to notice -- or care -- so why should he?

As usual, he stripped his clothes off and folded them neatly, leaving them on one of the lower bleachers. Alone as he was, there was no need to visit the locker room, after all. He'd worn swim trunks under his clothing, a gesture of preparedness just in case he'd ever been caught. For the ease of everyone involved in that situation it would be best not to have to face anyone entirely in the buff.

Kylar looked over the surface of the pool as he usually did, alert for any signs of the resident tentacle. They had their "agreement" of sorts, but since he didn't suppose the creature had eyes on that appendage he expected it might start poking about at any time to see just who or what was in the pool. His brief inspection concluded he pushed off the edge of the pool, bringing his arms up as he jumped to slip quite gracefully into the water with a surprisingly small splash. He didn't need to surface right away (or at all, if he wanted), of course, and so he simply enjoyed the feel of the water.

The hot springs he had experienced during the trip had their own charm and he didn't really enjoy the chlorine but what he appreciated above those lovely springs was the fact that he had an entire pool to swim in. An acceptable substitute until he could find the chance to pay Shichiro's lake another visit..

This school should have plenty of reasons to thank Shigeru for his presence by the end. He had not been there long but it had been enough for him to determine that the place was entirely too boring for his liking and he was doing everyone a favour being there. Shaking things up a little, in his way. Offering his services, in others.

Humans were so simple. He'd been taking mental notes when he'd moved around the school, picking out those most likely to be useful for a meal or otherwise for the duration of his stay. Some of them -- particularly the females -- seemed quite flattered by the attention, even if it was only a lingering look. Some of them would likely come along willingly.

Regardless, at the moment he was seeing to his duties in the music room. Part of keeping up appearances was actually doing the job he claimed he was here to do. He had forgotten how long it had been since the school had last had a music teacher but whenever it was and whoever it had been had left the place in such a way that something needed to be done about it. Shigeru was too neat and orderly to let that stand if he was going to be occupying this space for any longer than a short while.

There was no effort to his facade of normalcy, at least; it simply was. His manners were second nature, being the son of an important family he was well versed. The rest was a matter of appearance, which was all very easy to put together. His hair was pulled back into a long, neat ponytail and he was dressed neatly and appropriately for one who was a simple school teacher. He had even added a pair of black-rimmed glasses.

Even as he occupied himself tuning and cleaning instruments he was observing, his hearing sensitive enough even over the immediate sounds that he could still hear what was going on outside the room. One could never tell when some random snippet of information might prove useful..

KIKU DORM, first night of moths [open]

[personal profile] sorry_sorry 2016-05-01 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't that Tsubaki had problems sleeping. It was that she had problems staying in bed. Since her visit to the shrine, her thoughts kept straying to the strange power she'd seen Kasuga-senpai demonstrate. Magic wasn't the girl's purview, and worse, it felt like something else wanted her to be there.

She was asleep; her long dark hair pulled away from her face in a braid that swung back and forth with each unsteady step. Making her way down the stairs in Kiku dorm was treacherous enough for a sleepwalker, but getting outside...?

The wet grass didn't bother her feet, though the asphalt of the sidewalk cut the bottom of her feet, and left little splats of blood in her wake. In her sleep, each step brought her closer to the sound of music, like one of the children drawn to the Pied Piper.

GYMNASIUM (tag Kokoro)

[personal profile] nocturnalboy 2016-04-19 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The Girls' team volleyball match was over and the team members had had a meeting. Suguru was waiting just outside the gym doors. He'd been there for the game and was hanging out to wait for Kokoro. Something about the lamp above him seemed to be attracting gross bugs. Idly he swished them away from his face while he played games on his phone.

When he heard Kokoro coming to the door he looked up, all cool about it. He held out a cold can of sports drink and a fluffy towel.

"Hey. Good game, Amamiya," he offered, with a nod.

"Ah, thanks. I guess all those drills with Ulf-kun are finally paying off." Kokoro took the fluffy towel and the drink with a quiet thank you. "I'm surprised you came, though, Matsuzaki. I thought sports really weren't your thing." She grinned at him.

Unless he'd come to ogle long legs in tiny shorts. Kokoro wondered, not for the first time, why it was they didn't get the same long shorts that the boys' team had.

"Did you enjoy the game? The second set was intense." St. Lucia's Academy for Girls had really buckled down, and barely won the set, sending them into a third. "Morimoto totally saved our hides in the last one." Kokoro might've been the Amazonian Queen of the volleyball team, but as her year was coming to a close, she needed to assign a new captain. It was hard to decide.

KASUGA SHRINE COURTYARD [Tag Arin]

[personal profile] barrierwatching 2016-04-20 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Not very far from the boundary between shrine and school, Nao was diligently scrubbing down gravestones, a lantern by her feet to give light. Graves in the Kasuga shrine complex were cleaned and purified each new moon, to appease any spirits before the darkest night of the month, on which they could be vulnerable to being tainted if unhappy. The sun had gone down a while ago but she was almost done with her work here and tomorrow her schedule was packed and she wouldn't be able to finish this task if she put it off. What was more, she really didn't want to do the particular things she had to do tomorrow, so being able to stay busy doing this made tomorrow feel farther away.

Nao was using a wooden scrubbing brush, holy salt, and baking soda to get the dust and dirt out of every nook and cranny of this memorial tablet's posthumous name. "Here you go, Kouyou-sama," she chatted with the stone. "There, I've got your name quite a bit cleaner for you now. Oh, I saw a cat here yesterday. A white one. It sat right here by your name and took a nap in your shade."

Nao paused in her work and smiled up at the tombstone. "It had a pink nose and little pink paw-pads! So adorable, Kouyou-sama. So thank you for giving it a nice place to rest."

Nao used a gardening trowel to pick at and pull the weeds from between the cracks in the stones. She called over to where Arin was working. She had asked him to rinse the scrubbed stones well, double check for dirt, and leave a flower, a tangerine, a cup of salt and a cup of sake at each grave, then pray that the soul would find rest this new moon.

"Arin-kun?" Nao called softly, a bit timid to raise her voice towards the boy. "I'm almost done here. How are you doing over there?"

[personal profile] ghostfacin 2016-04-20 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Where other people might've found these kinds of busywork tasks boring, Arin did them happily and without complaint. He had some pre-conceived ideas about what his training might have entailed but he never expected he would be out cleaning gravestones in the dark. He heard her call to him but he didn't answer right away, finishing his careful prayer before he started gathering up his things again. Arin never judged her when she would speak aloud to things, but he still felt self-conscious about it and so he kept pleasant, friendly thoughts in mind (and hoped that counted) instead, but he smiled as he bid the grave owner a polite farewell before he stood up.

Or tried.

"Ah! Ow-.. okay.. sorry, sorry.." He said, apologising and looking around as if an offended spirit might just appear and chastise him for being disruptive. In his case, the spirit was willing but the flesh was really not happy about kneeling on the hard ground and bending awkwardly.

"Uh.. it's going good," he said once he was up. "You're really thorough.. so there's not much extra cleaning to do.." He had two buckets beside him -- one to use for the rinsing and the other to carry the other items he needed -- and he reached down to pick them up so he could carefully move along to the next gravestone.

"I bet you do all of this in the same amount of time it's taken us to do it together, huh?" Arin liked to think he was helping and cutting her work time down but he was regularly impressed at how efficiently and diligently she worked; more often than not he assumed he was slowing her down. At least he had plenty of incentive to get better at his work!
