The mournful strains of violin music drifted across the grounds of Kikuryou Academy. It was night time, the new moon casting everything into darkness, and the lack of wind made it feel like the Academy itself was holding its breath.

As Tom Marsh walked along, playing his violin, his face was completely expressionless. It seemed almost like the music was playing him, rather than the other way around. Perhaps it was. For this was no normal symphony, but rather, a prelude. Around him drifted a cloud of beautiful red moths, glowing around him like a swarm of embers, drifting like fallen leaves. They followed that tune like they would a flame, guided by it like a funeral march to the student dormitories.

Not that they would remain in their close orbit for long. As soon as they detected any human life, clumps of them broke off to swarm the unfortunate soul. To breathe in the poison in their wings was to feel one’s heart pound in fear. To be touched by them was to find the worst nightmares in the victim’s heart freed and brought to the surface. They fed on such horrors, and they wouldn’t stop their torment so long as they lived. Nowhere would be safe, not once they’d caught the scent of a victim.

Yet, for all of that danger, for as much as Tom seemed to be in control… there was another. A shadow to his presence, a silence to his music. A predator in the night that watched the assault with cold, cruel amusement. And most importantly, one who waited for those who might try to stop Tom, for he wouldn’t see his game stopped, not when this was only the opening move…

Back from the trip and with a festival to fund and put together, Nao was hard at work. Social media was the way to go! All she needed was a camera phone-- check-- and a few artistic a looking photos to put on Instapic and FriendChat and FaceSnap and those kinds of things! What was easier than that?

So that was why there was a short little kimono-clad miko wandering around the courtyard of the shrine, snapping photos with her cheap-o flip phone. Currently she was standing in front of the shrine's tiny shop, trying to get the perfect shot of the merchandise: lucky charms, talismans, prayer and pilgrimage books, items to keep away evil or bring in good, holy arrows and prayer boards. There were also some other odd things that didn't quite belong: bookmarks, beaded bracelets, homemade cupcakes, a few baskets of blueberries. A handwritten sign on the side of the booth window advertised bottles of water and rice balls.

Well, you had to branch out in business sometimes. Nao needed to see what kinds of things people actually wanted, so this was a test. She hoped customers would stop by!

Nao was busy in the small kitchen of the Kasuga home. She was putting the finishing touches on lunch, the trays laid out for five. She'd made cabbage rolls, a simple but homey, tasty dish which consisted of spiced ground pork and vegetables wrapped in a cabbage leaf and a slice of bacon, secured with a toothpick, then boiled in broth to cook.

She lined up the cabbage rolls on each plate and then added homemade pickled cucumber and carrot salad. A bowl of chilled silken tofu, a glass of iced buckwheat tea, and a sliced orange from the garden finished off the meal. Nao switched the plates and bowls around a bit! Trying to figure out how to best arrange them. Then she shrugged and picked up her grandmother's and mother's trays, balancing them carefully. Time to eat. )

If you possessed a map of Kikuryou's former castle grounds, you would notice ancient paths laid out in various geometric diagrams, leading from the school grounds around the old Kasuga shrine and ruins of unknown buildings from centuries past. A large and exact triangle was made by the school grounds, the Kasuga Shrine, and the forest that lay adjacent to both. Heavily forested wilderness beyond the school grounds stretched as far as one could see, a sea of green. It led straight out to the high mountains in the North and West.

When one stepped over the holy barrier tied between the school grounds and the forest, it seemed as if the forest itself was watching with many pairs of eyes. )

So the fight with the shapeshifting monster had been... difficult. Even now, after his body had gotten a few minutes to heal, Shichiro felt like he could barely put one foot in front of the other. Even worse, getting to the shrine meant climbing up stairs, and never in his life had they felt so impassable as at that moment.

Worse was the fact that he didn't have any form he could safely assume. As a fox, he was in danger of having an arrow shot at him. As a human, Nao would hate him and the others would be suspicious of him. Nor did he have enough energy to weave an illusion to look like anyone else. So, what to do?

In the end, he'd take yelling and threats to an arrow. So, in human form, with torn school uniform and blood streaked across his face and throat, he dragged himself past the front door and off to the garden. Nobuyuki's office should be somewhere here, and hopefully the old man would be on his own. Hopefully.

Once he found it, Shichiro slid open the sliding door... and promptly collapsed into the room. Even making it this far was a minor miracle, that he could still speak was another. Which he would. In a second. When the world stopped spinning.

It's April 6th, 2009. The cherry trees are blooming and the stairwell walls are bleeding! Welcome back to the new school year after the 3 week break.

Attendance and staff numbers are down, but Principal Narimatsu and Vice Principal Ono are not slacking off and neither should you. Vacation is over! Get in the gates on time and get to your homeroom! (And shine those shoes!)

New students will be given a tour by volunteers. All students and staff will be served a fancy picnic lunch of tea, finger sandwiches, and canapes in the courtyard at lunchtime today.

Be careful, the ghosts are very rowdy today!

"A-and that's our house," Nao said to Ulf, leading him across the white gravel of the shrine's main compound. As they came around the corner, she gestured with one hand, shy.

The Kasuga's house stood behind the shrine, hidden by a screen of bamboo and camellia bushes. It was a rather plain affair made of dark wood and a heavy blue tiled roof. At the edges of the roof hung rain-chains that had long since tarnished to a pleasant green patina. The building had not been painted since at least the 1970's and there were a few quite obvious areas of disrepair. Tiles had been disturbed on the west corner of the roof and were missing. One window two spaces to the left of the front door was cracked and had been secured with duct tape and holy charms. Not to mention the cracks in the foundation, some earthquake damage, a bee's hive under the eaves, and the wood at the corner of the kitchen was rotting away.

Other than that, it was a regular cozy old-style Japanese country home, except for the fact that this house had holy wards plastered outside every window and door. The family's laundry could be seen hanging on poles beyond the house, and behind that, a vegetable garden and an old-fashioned storehouse. And past that, nothing but trees, all the way up to the hills. It was quite the backyard, to say the least.

Nao tried to hold her head high as they walked through the mossy front garden and approached her home. She knew that it was probably noticeable how little money her family had, but it was still her family. )

Seated on a bench in the gardens after school, Nao screwed up her face into a squint. She stared at the pink camellia she was trying to draw, and then looked down at her big sketch pad. Then she looked back at the flower, then back at the sketch pad.

THIS WAS NOTHING LIKE IT! It looked more like... well to be honest, it looked a lot like a fish. How had a camellia turned into a fish!?

The first-year held her head with both hands and shook it slowly back and forth. "Ohhhhh... This art project is never going to get done," she lamented to herself, her usual pep becoming tinged with frustration. "Why can't I draw it how it looks! What should I dooo!?"

[day after Supply and Demand]

With determination in her shoulders and a firm grip on her bookbag, Nao was lying in wait. Not exactly lying, really, more like standing beside the pathway from the school to the dormitories. Sports Day practice had ended and the last bell had chimed, signaling the end of school. Nao had hurried out to find a good spot to wait for her target, namely, Chiba Yadoru from 1-C. He was sure to was sure to walk by on his way back to the dorms. All she had to do when he walked by was speak to him. She was sure she could do it right!

Her hands were starting to get sweaty as she scanned the students walking by, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. )

The sun is shining brightly in a clear blue sky and Sports Day 2008 is upon us! Chairs are set up on the wide expanse of hard-packed dirt grounds for the students, neatly arranged by team and class. Spectators are crowded around, many in chairs, the more casual ones on picnic blankets. The place is packed and sporty rock music is blaring from the loudspeakers.

Students are marching in to the grounds, dressed in neat, clean P.E. clothes with long team-color headbands tied on. Teachers are walking besides their classes, wearing their school tracksuits and t-shirts, as well as optional hats and sunglasses.

The Red Team's giant flaming tiger mascot poster is hanging in the west, and the Blue Team's huge blue dragon poster is splashing in the ocean to the east. Rivalry between the two teams has been fierce in the last week and the energy is very high. It's going to be a battle to remember!

Nao was putting away the cleaning supplies in the janitor's supply room in the first floor hallway after cleaning time. Her cleaning duty group had decided who should take things back with rock-paper-scissors and Nao had lost, and she'd been left carrying the brooms, mops, and dustpans back to the supply room. Oh well, she thought to herself. It was just as well anyway. The other girls always just dumped the cleaning things in a haphazard pile in the corner, a habit which made Nao want to scream. If Nao was left with the job all on her own, she could take the time to hang each item properly in its place on the wall.

She could hear running feet outside. The after-school practice for Sports Day Radio Exercises would be starting soon, wouldn't it? Oh, dreadful Sports Day Exercises. She was short, so she'd be right in the front of her class's line during exercises. That meant she really didn't have much choice but to try hard.

Nao sighed to herself as she hung the cleaning tools. She was thinking about dinner-- tonight's dinner was her grandma's turn to cook, and Grandma's nikujaga with carrots was heavenly. Her mother had asked her to bring potatoes home from the grocery store. She had to write that down, or she might forget--

The door of the supply room slammed suddenly behind her back. Nao jumped at the loud noise, a small yelp escaping her. Someone must have run by and shut the door on her, she reasoned. It was pitch black so she had to grope her way back to the door. But when she found it again, the doorknob would not turn. "Huh?" Nao said aloud. She jiggled the doorknob, twisted as hard as she could, pulled, but the door seemed to be stuck.

Was it just her, or did the air feel very cold all of a sudden? A chill traveled down her spine. There was a soft sound like a dry breath being exhaled, a sigh that reminded her ears of silk brushing on silk. She could hear it from somewhere behind and above her, where the corner of the supply room would be if she could see. "Who's there," Nao said aloud, commanding her voice to be firm.

There was no reply, but Nao had a feeling that the air was not right. Something was coming, she could feel it crawling closer. The skin of her arms and legs was turning to gooseflesh. She jiggled the doorknob again and thumped on the door with a fist. "Someone, someone help," she called, as loud as she could muster.

"Herregud." Ulf sighed and loosened off his tie, wondering mournfully how many hours of detention he'd get if he just stripped down to his boxers. It was too damn hot! Sure, Norwegian summers weren't altogether freezing, but at least there he'd been able to escape for a swim. And it was a different kind of heat, too. He still wasn't quite used to it.

On the other hand, he was enjoying this school. More than he'd thought he would, actually. It was nice to be out on his own, even though he missed his siblings. Well. The younger ones, anyway. Efraim he could certainly do without. But the school...yeah, it was pretty alright. People were mostly nice (apart from that weird jerk Suguru) and helped him muddle along with his improving Japanese. They pointed and waved when he walked past - prob'ly on account of the fact that he was so obviously foreign, he supposed - and that did a young man's ego a lot of favours.

He rounded a corner, idly listening to his iPod through one earbud while exchanging friendly greetings with strangers, and froze. His eyebrows twitched together in puzzlement as he continued to stare.

Was that...a box? Moving by itself?

It appeared to be so.

Now, Ulf had seen a lot of strange things in his sixteen years of life. He was himself a strange thing. But for some reason the idea of a box just floating was more than a little disturbi--

--There was a girl holding it. Okay. Okay. That made more sense. Ulf sighed in relief and continued walking. Poor kid, the box was bigger than she was! What the hell was in it? Even if it wasn't heavy it was unwieldy enough to make cartage difficult. Jeez. "Hey, hey! You okay with that? Need some help?"

The afternoon air was warm and heavy with springtime scents. From where she sat at her window, Nao could see a white butterfly dancing on the breeze. She watched it flutter and twirl up into the sunny sky. The insect was pretty much the only activity in all of Kasuga Shrine right now. There weren't usually many visitors on Saturdays.

Like most Shinto shrines, Kasuga-jinja had a small shop and information booth. From the shop window, one could keep an eye on the wide gravel-filled main compound leading up the the main altar. Make sure no one took money from the offering box, that sort of thing. It wasn't much more than a long window cut into a wall. Rows of trinkets, lucky charms, protection amulets, and other such things were lined up neatly on raised wooden displays on the counter, with prices marked in a careful hand.

Dressed in pressed, starched white kimono and red hakama, Nao was watching over the shrine's shop booth for the afternoon. The butterfly now out of sight, Nao redirected her attention to her work. Her long, heavy sleeves tied behind her, she had finished writing a large stack of protection amulet papers and was now busily studying for her midterms. She was sure that the science test was going to be a disaster. Shibata-sensei's quizzes were so hard!

Nao frowned at her notes and erased a sloppily written equation, rewriting it neatly with her mechanical pencil. The dangling panda and heart charms on the end of her pencil went clickety-clack as she wrote. It felt like the only sound for miles.
